Postcard Swap Snacks

I am going to start a new section (label) called Postcard Snacks because we have had a load of great new recipes to try from the swap. We have been trying out the recipes we sent too, we will also redo some of the snack recipes we received in last years swap. As I post about them I will link them back to this post, so this will be like an anchor post in case you are looking for a specific recipe.

So far this year we have received...
Bhel Puri - India
Cheddar Cheese balls - USA
Apple banana smoothy - USA
Piparkakut - Finland
Mousetraps - New Zealand
Pikelets - New Zealand
Paari chaat - India
Kesaekeitto -Finland
Quick chewy pina colada yoghurt - Bahamas

I am still expecting a couple more, I will add them to the list as I get them. I couldn't decide on a single recipe so  I found 4, all from Africa

Mango salad - Niger
Fruity Mint Kababs - South Africa
Avocados with Honey - Cape Verde Islands

The rules were
  • has to be healthy
  • has to be easy to prepare - a child can do alone or with a little assistance
  • has to use ingredients that are widely available
If you joined the swap and would like to do a 'guest post' with your recipe making please let me know. I am going to try and do a recipe a week, but don't hold me to it :o)

Montessori children are encouraged to be independent and so from when ebi-kun was only about 14 months old I started showing him how to prepare his own snack. This meant getting out the things he needed from his shelf, a small plate, chopping board, wooden knife and cloth. Washing his hands before he started and putting on his apron is also part of the routine. he started off my peeling and chopping soft fruit such as a banana and then onto spreading cream cheese or similar n bread or crackers. now we have got to the stage where he enjoys cooking and making his own snacks from scratch, we were running low on ideas, hence the postcard swap.

  2. I'd like to do a guest post. I've never done one before, so let me know exactly what I would need to do for that. These oranges look great. We may try these for breakfast in the morning. Would you like to do a guest post for me?

  3. Heather - we sent 4 different cards out, I made them with African images on the front and then the 4 recipes above. The first one we made/sent was the moroccan oranges - see the next post...

Sarah - that would be great, haven't figured how it is done yet...

  4. What a great idea. I am looking forward to snack ideas.
I also never thought about having my boys try to assemble their own snacks. I really like that idea of early independence
