The Collecting Board...tutorial

Let's All Go On A Colour Walk

We have done colour walks before using this box, which was a chocolate box and we coloured in each hole, the idea is to find something that matches each colour...

It's Great But The Is A Problem!

The box + a small child has the problem that they often accidentally tip the collections out when they go to pick up something new (amusing as an adult to watch but frustrating for the child!) So, here is the latest development… the colour walk board.

What you need.
  • A piece of stiff card, ours is from a shoebox
  • A piece of waxed/greaseproof paper
  • Double-sided tape
  • White stickers
  • Strong tape
  • Clip (optional)

Cut the board to the size you want it, score along the top to make the front flap or if you are using a box try and cut it so that the box corner is the bit you fold over. The front flap should be about 2cm, if you are feeling arty use some fancy scissors to give it a nice edge.

Cut the wax paper so that it is the same size as the back of the board then tape it to the inside of the front flap, you might have to try different tapes until you find something that will hold the wax paper, mine didn't stick too well which is why we used the clip too.

Fold the wax paper out of the way. Down the left-hand side stick some white stickers, and leave a good gap between each one. If you have coloured stickers you could use those, all I could find were hole reinforcers, and then I coloured each one using felt tips.

Use the double-sided tape and make a stripe running next to each coloured sticker. Peel off the top so the sticky side is exposed. The wax paper shouldn't stick to it so you can fold that down until you find something you want to stick on the tape.

Then go for a walk, we had a rule that we couldn't pick anything from neighbour's gardens but petals that had fallen were fair game. Before we started I also asked Ebi-kun to predict which row/colour would get filled up first. He said green.

Purple won! We didn't find any blue items. We are going to do this again once the leaves start to change colour but do a gradation of yellows, oranges and browns.

I also found it is a handy way to keep tabs on my fabric collection, I can stick a small scrap of each fabric along the lines, would be good for quilters working out their palette.

  3. Thanks...i did this today with my 22 month old. He did well for the first 1/2 of the walk but then was more interested in the train going by. A great way for me to tech him his colour. Will try again in a few months when he 'hopefully' has more patients.
