The Declaration Of You Blog Tour

When the gals from The Declaration Of You contacted me and asked if I would like to join the blog tour, of course I said yes!

The book, if you haven't already heard about it...
Is to help you uncover your purpose in life! Through a series of creative, colourful exercises–questions to get the wheels turning and an encouraging kick in the pants–readers of The Declaration of You will get all the permission they’ve craved to step passionately into their lives, discover how they and their gifts are unique and uncover what they are meant to do!

And this weeks topic is about...

It is a funny word "success", the meaning changes with time and means different things to different people, my idea of success is probably very different to yours.

For some success is reaching a certain position in their company, owning a fancy car, living in specific neighbourhood. For others it is winning the trophy, finishing the marathon or getting medical tests results that show you are in the clear.

So, what does success mean for me?

Well, I won't be running any marathons in the near future so we can scratch that from the list. For my work, having a location independent business that brings in five figures (dollars) a month is my idea of success. I am not there yet, but I will be. Although we are happily settled where we are, after the Tohoku earthquake I decided that we needed a back-up plan and that would mean having a location independent business, so that if we ever need to get up and leave, we can. Of course, that would only work if the job I am doing is bringing in enough money to support us!

Financial success would make a big difference too, we could travel more, I could put more money back into my business and reach more people, help more people.

Success touches other parts of our lives too. I would say I am pretty successful at running the home, raising a child in a foreign (to me) country and running a business too. There are always things I could be better at, situations I could have handled better but part of that, I think is the learning curve, learning from my mistakes will make me more successful, if I remember next time round that is!

Some areas, such as gardening, I doubt I will ever be a success at, if I manage to keep our one house plant alive, I consider that a success. Maybe when I am financially successful I will hire a gardener. I like to include mini successes, like trying a new recipe and it is edible or setting up an experiment for Ebi-kun that not only works but he is fascinated with the process too. Sometimes, I have several success stories in a day - tiny as they may be.

I am sure when I was a kid my ideas of success did not include keeping a house plant alive, it did include winning horse competitions and completing various scouting awards. To a certain extent, passing my school exams too but as I think about that now, I don't believe that was my idea of success more that it was what I told by 'the adults'. You know, you will never be a success unless you pass all your exams and get a degree, total bunkum, being educated doesn't necessarily equate to being successful.

So a round up on my ideas of success for me:
  • To run a location independent business making 5 figures or more a month
  • To have a happy, relaxed and stress free family life
  • To travel more
  • To have a best selling book
  • To have a mini success every day
  • To keep the Christmas cactus alive

  1. Haha! I love "To keep the Christmas cactus alive." Mine would surely have perished by now.

Just curious, when you mention a mini success every day, what does that mean to you? I love to count up my mini successes as well, and even though they sometimes seem piddly, they make me feel like I'm accomplishing something (or at least moving closer to my goal), and so they're so worth it.

  2. I am happy to hear that plants are NOT your thing, 'cos they certainly are not mine, either! I can raise kids and cats, but not plants. Houseplants die on me, whatever I do (or don't do). I have told my DH time after time not to buy any more for Mother's Day. This year he finally seemed to get the message and I got a nice, guilt-free floral arrangement. As for my garden, I have ivy and I have a hydrangea that bounces back year after year. And weeds. My mum is a fantastic gardner and loves growing things, and many of my friends enthusiastically swap notes about their flower gardens or their vegetable patches. I like flowers and I like vegetables, and I can buy both in the shops. I've stopped feeling like a failure for not being interested in gardening--and not caring a ding about it! But I'm still secretly pleased when I find other people who are the same.

    For me, success is:
--The thrill I get every time one of my articles is published in the newspaper or a magazine. That never grows old.
--Honoring work deadlines and delivering my best for any professional project I take on.
    --A reasonably organized home.
--Happy kids who like who they are--so far, so good! (And who like to read in English. One out of three so far…)
--Keeping up to date on my family scrapbooks.
    --Time for myself every day.
--A fun family trip overseas once a year.
--And cats. Always there must be cats.
