Teaching Manners The Montessori Way

I was thrilled to be asked by Deb to review her new book Montessori at Home or School: How to Teach Grace and Courtesy, which as she says it is like Montessori meets Miss Manners!

The book gives a good overview of the Montessori method for teaching manners which can easily be used with just one child or a group of children and is aimed at kids from pre-school age through to elementary school.

The book then covers various situations where grace and courtesy are important such as meal times, greeting people, answering the phone etc.

One of things I talk about in my courses is showing appreciation for others, in these crazy busy times we live in, it is so easy to forget to use our Ps & Qs, to bark orders instead of making requests and forgetting to thank other members of the family for the work that they do. Time and time again, I get people come back to me and say what a difference it makes when they have started being more polite, it has an amazing knock on effect!

Sometimes teaching can be really daunting especially if you are not a trained teacher and parenting is your first time! So having a guide or manual you can refer to really helps, I like how you can go straight to one specific area and start applying the techniques straight away. It might sound old fashioned but good manners can get you a long way!

So if you feel like your kids are turning into an unruly rabble and you need some tips on how to get them back on track, then this book is for you!

  2. I agree this book is good if kids are getting unruly, and also it is good for children who would just like to understand the rules a little better to be more comfortable out in public. I like your emphasis on showing appreciation for others.
