Shattered marbles....

I found this idea via Pinterest and knew I just had to give it a go! Since the oven was still hot from baking bread I put the glass marbles in metal pan and heated them for 20 minutes at 200c. Once they were hot I took them out and dropped them into a bowl of icy water. The change in temperature makes them shatter from the inside out. That was it! Some colours worked better then others, I would like to try it with different types of marbles to compare the effects but these ones turned out really pretty...

Ebi-kun found it fascinating and couldn't wait to get his hands on some to add to his 'treasure'. I don't recommend kids playing with these afterwards, I did try dropping a few and smashing some together and one did break, so maybe this should be a science only project. The crafter who first blogged about this made hers into pendents. Of course we just used a pack of cheap marbles, maybe different types react in different ways.
