A terribly sad day for the crafting world

I have just learnt about the tragic death of Kathreen Ricketson, founder of Whip Up and the Action Pack magazines. Her partner, Rob is still missing, presumes death and they leave behind their gorgeous children. My heart is breaking for them.

I 'met' Kathreen through the crafty community years ago, she has guest posted here and I have on Whip Up and the Action pack Magazines. She was currently touring Australia for the year with her family and writing a book about their experiences. Kathreen was so generous and kind and I am sure she has helped millions of crafters over the years. She will be sorely missed.

The announcement of the tragedy is here and more info about what happened here.

Water - Action Pack - Win A Copy

As you know I am an Action Pack fan and this year Kathreen has changed it up a bit. She is currently taking a year and travelling/camping around Australia with her family and still managing to pull together the Action pack magazine.  This time round she is doing 4 bigger bumper magazines spaced over the year, the first one this year being Water AND, I am a contributor - whoo-hoo.

Action Pack Water

There are lots of great experiments & activities to get stuck into, the age range is 7-12 but I think younger kids can enjoy many of the experiments even if they don't understand the science behind it yet or you can work together on an activity rather than letting the child do it independently, like an older child would do.

Of course, it is all beautifully and clearly laid out and this edition includes activities from making a water rocket to surface tension to water crackers to density towers, plus puzzles and quizzes and there are some great contributors to boot.

We explored density towers which was as much fun for me as it was ebi-kun and we followed it up with some of his own experiments, that is one of the things I love about kitchen science, follow up experiments can easily be done without any worry of setting of some kind of dangerous chemical reaction (chemistry was not a strong subject for me at school)!

Handmade gifts

There is something special about giving and receiving handmade gifts don't you think? You know that the person giving has taken extra time and effort to make that gift for you or even if it isn't handmade by them, they have taken the time to find something special.

If you sew, then don't forget that I have a collection of great sewing patterns, most of them are for beginner/intermediate level stitchers and you know your kids will love it even more if you have made it for them. The patterns are available as PDF's so as soon as you buy it, it goes whizzing from my end to your end in a matter of seconds.

You can grab your patterns from the My Organized Chaos website, Craftsy or Etsy, with Etsy I have to email the pattern to you, so not quite instant.

Can't Sew. Won't Sew?
How about brewing up some natural lip balms, tonics, creams and ointments? The new issue of Action Pack is out and this issue is all about Family Apothecary. If you are looking to go greener this Christmas, then all the recipes you need are in here!

Latest edition of Action Pack is out!

As you probably know, I love this magazine, it is always packed with great projects and ideas and easily laid out for kids to understand. Although it is aimed at a slightly higher age group than Ebi-kun we still get a lot out of it, it just means I have to be a little more hands on.

This issue is packed with great recipes and little snippets of information about the ingredients. Since Ebi-kun has started school it has taken a while to find our new rhythm, what we are doing now is after school, twice a week he has play dates with his friends. Once a week we cook together, sometimes he picks the recipe, sometimes we try something new or I will decide depending on what is in the fridge. The other two days are for projects of some description, this seems to be working for us at the moment.

With the new Action Pack we have another 30 recipes to add into the mix, I wonder what Ebi-kun will want to try out first?
