The Power Of Kids - art from a disaster

Thanks to Spoon and Tamago I found out about this exhibition which is taking place in Muji's Atelier Exhibit space. All the work on display was created by children from Ishinomaki City, one of the places that was badly hit by the tsunami. Many of the children lost their homes and lived at the school for quite some time. The artwork was made about a month after the disaster, the children had no toys to play with and instead made their own using the debris and their imagination.

The exhibition runs through until July 29th and they also have 3 workshops so that other children can go and create art too. We have booked Ebi-kun in for the 28th July, which was the only date we could make. If any of you local readers want to join, it would be great to meet up with you. All the information is in this PDF but it is all Japanese, you can make the reservation online too. The actual atelier is near Tokyo station so if anyone has any good ideas what to do in the morning there, please let me know!

One of the great things that came out of this was that an art gallery in Italy exhibited the kids work and some of the kids flew out to Italy, what a wonderful experience that must have been, and an experience that may well not have happened if the circumstances had been different. I am sure they would all prefer for the quake not to have happened but it did and their lives will be shaped differently now, who knows what other great experiences lay ahead for them.

It will be fun to see what the kids make on the workshop day and if you do book in, let me know!

  2. My friend is going to take her 2 children - not sure if to a workshop but definitely to the exhibition. I love the power of the internet - here in Scotland I read about the exhibit on Spoon & Tamago's website, I share it on Facebook with my friend in Tokyo and now she is going to take her kids!

I hope that you enjoy it!
