Like mother, like son....

Today is the first day back at yochien, well half days until Friday so I told Ebi-kun that he needed to get all his things ready, including all his homework, I went off to do something and heard him shout 'how do you spell castle'? Confused, since he was supposed to be getting all his bits together, I went to investigate and this is what I found....

His 'To Do' list, he kindly put on dog photos for me so I wouldn't for get to do it and obviously building a lego castle and playing on the Wii are important things to do too. Lol.

For yochien he was sent home with a calendar where he had to record the weather every day and put a sticker in every day he brushed his teeth. We were also supposed to give him a chores to do each day to get a sticker but since he already does chores we didn't bother and just let him have the stickers. Then there were a couple of crafts and some cutting and sticking to do. He also had to take in a project or some art that he has done over the summer for them to display at the art show, he decide he wanted to take his African mask that he made and picked out a handful of pictures. The parents also got homework, we have to write a piece for the yochien yearbook, hubby did that, thank you!

I am not sure I agree with all this homework palaver but it does prepare them for school here and I do like the idea of preparing the child for life rather than just throw them in at the deep end. How about where you are, do kindy kids get summer homework to do?

  1. I love it! Organized already. We all have to take time every now and then to play Wii. Thanks for sharing. Too cute!

  2. Oh YES. We do. Loads. The school session here starts somewhere in March/April, so summer vacations come after you have been to school a while. So, homework. It varies from school to school, but by and large, it is both academic, and something that ought to be creative, but strangely isn't for the majority. This year, our entire scheduled study program was upset by the homework - stuff like five times alphabet practice in hindi and english, five times two letter words etc etc. Sounds little enough but getting it done took more than two hours each day. There was a bit of colouring and such, but otherwise it was mostly academic, and we couldn't get around to any GK, geography or science, or crafting either.

  3. I utterly and completely refuse to do summer homework. They can send it home but they can't make us do it! Frankly, I am confident that we do other, just as important work with them and I am not going to make the children hate learning by making them sit down and do work they can already do, and I am not prepared to teach them something new because I do it "wrong" and then they have to relearn it.
We consolodate maths with real life activities like shopping and cooking and we play games that practice timestables etc.
We write letters to famous people, play language games all the time and the children write their own private blog.
The summer holiday is our time to follow interests - like Ancient Egyptians or Football and to play outside, in the garden, on the beach or in the forest as much as possible. In my opinion, if a child isn't in dire need of a bath at the end of a summer day, it was probably a bit of a wasted day.

  4. yes. we get homework everyday - all written work like making up sentences with the given words and writing them down, but in one those strange ironies-of-parenting-type situations, my 5 yr old LOVES it!?!

  5. There does seem to be a ridiculous amount of written work and not enough focus on other things there is also a big emphasis for a summer project here, my friend Vicky's son made this amazing ship
