more colour mixing

I have been using some of the ideas from The Artful Parent and babyEbi is loving it. If you haven't checked out her blog you should, she has some wonderful toddler art ideas.
First we tried the salt painting, 'paint' a picture with squeezable glue then cover with salt, shake off the excess. Then using watercolour paints, ours we quite thinned down with water, just touch a spot on the salted glue and watch it grow, we both enjoyed this and spent a good hour working quietly apart from the odd "ohhhs" "ahhhs" and "beautifuls".
It takes a while to dry but when it does it is like crystals, very pretty.

The yesterday we tried rainbow in a bag. It is very easy to prepare, I basically did it the same as Jean...
  • 1 cup corn starch
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 4 cups water
  1. put them in a pan and heat and stir until the mixture thickens, remove from the heat and continue stiring for a while.
  2. separate the mixture into three bowls and add a few drops of food colour to each bowl, red, blue and yellow.
  3. Mix each bowl well and allow to cool.
  4. get out 4 ziplock bags, put 2 spoons of mix in the bags as follows

BAG 1 - red and yellow
BAG 2 - red and blue
BAG 3 - yellow and blue
BAG 4 - red, blue and yellow

NOTE - if you think you child can open the bags then tape up the top to prevent a super sticky mess

then let your little one squidge away, try to get them to predict what colour they will make, the fourth bag was actually a left-overs bag put produced a really pretty mixture. If you hold the bag up to a sunny window the mixture is semi-translucent and really beautiful, the photo doesn't really do it justice.

Yesterday I got Babyebi a big blackboard to use outside, we tied it to the fence, he tried it out but was really too tired after a day of chasing his girlfriends round the park and getting REALLY dirty. It was a lovely day and we got to catch up with friends and their new baby, the moms gossiped, the dads played with the kids, the cherry blossoms were full bloom and the sun was shining, what more could you ask for?
