We're cheering for yellow

The verdict from the Dr was that he has to go back in two weeks! The bone is starting to heal though, which is a good thing and the Dr said Ebi-kun could join the sports festival as long as he didn't use his arm!

So this is his lucky yellow bento since he is in the yellow team this year.

Top left: kaki stars and pumpkin salad
Bottom left: Corn and tangerine with a string cheese cheerleader
then of the left are chestnut rice rolls wrapped in thin omlette, yellow pepper stars and yellow mini tomatoes.

Should keep him going...

PS - I am looking for bloggers to review my latest book "Fast and Fun Ghoulish Halloween Treats" if you have been a reader for a while you will know how much I love fun ghoulish food! If you would like a free copy in return for a blog review then please pop your details in this form! Can't wait to share...

papercraft

I was over on How about orange... and saw she had a post on Papercraft.
(she also has some lovely new fabric that she has designed, if only I could get my hands on some of that...)
This is a great site but all in Japanese, don't let that put you off, if you click on the menu pictures (on the picture that look like a bookshelf) it will take you to another page with individual pictures items, click the picture you like. Either next to, or below the picture are some buttons, the top one is the PDF file of the craft to download, the second button is the PDF instructions and you don't need to worry about the third button.
Although I really fancied doing the fruit and veg shop I decided to start off easy and do the bento box instead. Of course the glue I was trying to use was rubbish and everything kept getting unstuck so I resorted to sellotape and then BabyEbi kept demanding to play with the bits before I had finished them but this is the finished result before it all got trashed 10 minutes later! maybe I will do the shop when he is in bed.

If you are really into this kind of thing then have a look at papercraft-world it certainly has something for everyone.

On another note, we have just found a great pincer finger exercise. The pincer fingers are the ones you use for holding a pencil and so it is important for children to work these muscles to prepare them for writing. Many Montessori exercises such as the cylinder blocks and metal insets use these muscles. Anyway, my pepperball was empty so after buying some pepper today BabyEbi filled it for me, took him forever, the sweetie. He picked up one pepper ball at a time, they are quite small and filled it up, luckily for him I only have the mini crushed. Might be a while before he gets to do this exercise again since I don't use that much pepper.

leaving bento

Babyebi's friends are leaving tomorrow, to go back to Canada (mom is having baby number 3) they will be coming back early next year. So, we had a last playdate at Kodomo No Shiro, we always take a bento so I made an inspired leaving bento with a plane flying over trees and a load of sad "characters"

The plane is on top of rice and made of Japanese fish cake, the windows are nori seaweed, the trees are broccoli, tomato friends with cheesey faces with konbu hair, taco weiners (taco is octopus in Japanese) and the rolls at the bottom are asparagus wrapped in ham and cheese.

froggy bento

I had to make BabyEbi a bento today, I was inspired by all the rain to make a froggy one. Cute huh?
Green rice (using pea flavouring) with sugar snap peas, taco weiners (mini sausages made into octopus) wearing tomato hats, fish sausage and there are some beans hidden underneath.

Bento's - gotta love them

Yes, if there is one thing that I like about Japanese cooking, it is bento boxes. Especially the cute kids ones. So, once BabyEbi was big enough to have his own bento I kitted myself out with all the necessary items, nori punches, a variety of cutters, that sprinklie stuff you put in the rice to make it a pretty colour, little paper cases for keeping food separate, yes, I have it all. I also got myself a couple of bento books, not that I can read the recipes but I can pretty much work out what everything is from the photos. Of course, having all the equipment and ingredients is one thing, plenty of time to create a cool bento is also needed, a cheese buttie, apple and a bag of crisps is SO much quicker, but sadly not as satisfying to make.
Here are a couple of my previous bento attempts...
