And this weeks topic is about...
It is a funny word "success", the meaning changes with time and means different things to different people, my idea of success is probably very different to yours.
For some success is reaching a certain position in their company, owning a fancy car, living in specific neighbourhood. For others it is winning the trophy, finishing the marathon or getting medical tests results that show you are in the clear.
So, what does success mean for me?
Well, I won't be running any marathons in the near future so we can scratch that from the list. For my work, having a location independent business that brings in five figures (dollars) a month is my idea of success. I am not there yet, but I will be. Although we are happily settled where we are, after the Tohoku earthquake I decided that we needed a back-up plan and that would mean having a location independent business, so that if we ever need to get up and leave, we can. Of course, that would only work if the job I am doing is bringing in enough money to support us!
Financial success would make a big difference too, we could travel more, I could put more money back into my business and reach more people, help more people.
Success touches other parts of our lives too. I would say I am pretty successful at running the home, raising a child in a foreign (to me) country and running a business too. There are always things I could be better at, situations I could have handled better but part of that, I think is the learning curve, learning from my mistakes will make me more successful, if I remember next time round that is!
Some areas, such as gardening, I doubt I will ever be a success at, if I manage to keep our one house plant alive, I consider that a success. Maybe when I am financially successful I will hire a gardener. I like to include mini successes, like trying a new recipe and it is edible or setting up an experiment for Ebi-kun that not only works but he is fascinated with the process too. Sometimes, I have several success stories in a day - tiny as they may be.
I am sure when I was a kid my ideas of success did not include keeping a house plant alive, it did include winning horse competitions and completing various scouting awards. To a certain extent, passing my school exams too but as I think about that now, I don't believe that was my idea of success more that it was what I told by 'the adults'. You know, you will never be a success unless you pass all your exams and get a degree, total bunkum, being educated doesn't necessarily equate to being successful.
So a round up on my ideas of success for me:
- To run a location independent business making 5 figures or more a month
- To have a happy, relaxed and stress free family life
- To travel more
- To have a best selling book
- To have a mini success every day
- To keep the Christmas cactus alive
