How to make finger breadsticks

Yes! Severed fingers suitable for vegetarians!

This is another simple recipe and the kids can get in on the act too. They don't take too long to make but you do need to give the dough rise time, I started the dough off then got on with some other jobs and came back to it later.

What you need:

  • 250g bread/strong flour (I used 150g white and 100g brown)
  • 100ml milk
  • 80ml water
  • 17g sugar or honey
  • 5g salt
  • 10g olive oil or butter
  • 7g dry yeast
  • 1 red pepper chopped into small pieces
Decoration
  • Onion - cut into thick slices then chop to make fingernails
  • ketchup
I have a confession here. I usually just chuck everything in the bread maker to mix up the dough. I have done it by hand, again just throwing everything in and it's work out fin. Might be an idea to add the yeast to the liquid before mixing it all together.

Leave to raise for and hour or until it's doubled in size.

Now comes the fun part.

Pull off a chunk of dough and roll into a sausage shape. Squash it down a little at the end and add a piece of onion, dunk the bottom end in the ketchup.

Use a sharp knife and make a couple of slashes for the knuckles.

Let them stand whilst you heat the oven, 210 Deg C, bake for about 15 minutes, keep an eye on them, they should sound hollow when you tap them and look baked.

The red pepper just adds a bit of flavour and makes them look, well, more revolting!

We served our fingers with the incredibly yummy and easy to make Rustic Ham Mousse

How to make a tasty flayed skin head for Halloween

How to make a tasty flayed skin head for Halloween

I have seen these popping up on Pinterest and found them totally revolting, which of course made me want to put one together - hahaha, sometimes I worry about how my brain works!

This was super simple to day, perfect if you are short on time but want to scare the beejeebers out of your party goers.

You will some kind of head, I don't recommend a real one. I picked up a polystyrene one from Daiso, it was ¥600. It's actually a full head is I cut it in half so it would lay flat. I have seen people use decoration skulls so whatever you can get your hands on.

Start off by covering your head with cling film/saran wrap. You want to do this to protect your head and make the whole thing safer when it comes to eating the skin, erm I mean ham.

I decided to cover the tray with foil too but that is just me.

Then all you need to do is peel your parma ham out of your pack and lay it on your head. It's that simple! I read somewhere that cheaper ham molds better to the shape of the head because better quality ham tends to be tried longer so it's not as flexible.

The eyes, you could use egg eyes (tutorial here) or jelly eyes which is the ones we used.

I served this delight with tortilla chips, bread severed fingers and rustic ham dip. Nom Nom Nom.

It got lots on nods of approval and some strange looks by some passers by (we were in the park having the lunch), luckily the police were not called!

So if you are looking for something super simple and quick to throw together, this is the one to go for!

We're cheering for yellow

The verdict from the Dr was that he has to go back in two weeks! The bone is starting to heal though, which is a good thing and the Dr said Ebi-kun could join the sports festival as long as he didn't use his arm!

So this is his lucky yellow bento since he is in the yellow team this year.

Top left: kaki stars and pumpkin salad
Bottom left: Corn and tangerine with a string cheese cheerleader
then of the left are chestnut rice rolls wrapped in thin omlette, yellow pepper stars and yellow mini tomatoes.

Should keep him going...

PS - I am looking for bloggers to review my latest book "Fast and Fun Ghoulish Halloween Treats" if you have been a reader for a while you will know how much I love fun ghoulish food! Zucchini Brownie Graveyard

Some people seem to think that I spend a lot of time on my Halloween madness, but the truth is, I'm pretty lazy and I'm all for taking the easiest-least-amount-of-work possible route. This graveyard cake is the the perfect example!

What you need:

  • a zucchini brownie cake (recipe on this post)
  • chocolate butter cream, I didn't weigh anything, just chucked butter, cocoa and icing sugar in and blended them
  • white chocolate
  • skeleton mold (something like this) I have a dinosaur bones and a skull mold so I used those
  • gummy worms
  • optional - stone candy, grave stones, coffins...
Super easy, Make the cake, smash it up, dollop some buttercream in, then half bury the bones, skulls and worms etc. Done!

I did it in a big pan this time just because it was easier to transport to the party, if we had this at home I'd have gone to town a bit but I really needed to keep this version simple.

Spooky Cocoa Anyone?

Well yesterday turned out to be one THOSE days - you know the sort. Ebi-kun only had a half day at school so I tried to jam as much as possible in for the day before he got home.

Hubby had left late because he had a seminar to go to in town and it didn't start until 9am so he stopped for a Starbucks and some downtime, only to find that he got the date wrong, so he'll be doing it all again next week!

We have a Halloween party this weekend so we decided since Ebi-kun was going to be at home that we would use it as prep time, finish our outfits etc. Only to have it disrupted because I discovered a big water leak in the kitchen, that had gone under the counter and was coming out the other side. The side where I had piles of books and parcels ready to go to the post office *scream*

Luckily, I spotted the water before it got to the packages *phew*

Now I am sitting in waiting for the plumb to arrive and feeling grateful for the constant water supply we usually have, it's so easy to take for granted these things! But not having water (we had to turn off the mains) is driving me mad, that and all the chaos I'm sat in...add the contents of the kitchen drawers to the piles of packages to go out! I just want ti fixed!

On the upside, I was inspired to make Ebi-kun spooky hot cocoa.

Basically, hot cocoa with marshmallows, I used black food colour to paint on ghost faces, looks really cool when they were half melted and pretty disgusting when just the face was left! Big hit with the boy though, try it!

Quick and easy spooky healthy Halloween snacks....

Halloween is coming and as you know it is our favourite season! Now, I have to admit I have kinda fallen off the crafty wagon the last couple of months but I know with all the spooky inspiration that is coming I will soon back back up and running!

This is an oldie but a goodie and fun for little ones too, it would be a good activity to keep them busy as you are cooking dinner!

What you need:

Sharpies...

Stickers...

Fruit...

And a mat to work on is a good idea too! Simple draw eyes on the stickers then stick them on the fruit to make spooky faces. You could use googlie eyes but if you want to stretch the time out a bit the draw the eyes instead. You could get really fancy and add other facial features too.

I have seen faces drawn directly onto the fruit but personally, I don't want to eat anything that might have seeped through the skin!

I would like you to meet...Mr Meathead

It was A-kun's birthday so the boys had a sleepover, they all had a great time. They made their own pizza and I made them something special - A-kun did ask for a ghoulish party!

Mr Meatload Head

Mom sent me a skull cake tin last year which I haven't had chance to use, so I thought I would try a meatloaf, if is the first time I have made it and didn't realise that it would shrink, so technically it is Mr Shrunken Meatloaf Head! The eyes are hard boiled egg (eyeball tutorial here) and of course I had to turn up with children's severed fingers (severed finger tutorial here)

I also found these cool plain white card masks in the ¥100 shop, so I made the boys a bag with pens and a mask each and they went to town decorating them. Must say, the masks are pretty spooky even without being decorated. They all had a great time but like any good sleepover, they were like the walking dead the next day!

A Ghoulish Feast fit for a Zombie King...

Last Halloween post for the year, promise!
It is a tradition that I serve up something especially delicious revolting for Halloween dinner. I usually do a Halloween Muffin Tin Dinner but I decided this year to make use of the new punch bowl set.

Starting bottom left and going clockwise we have...

Frankenstein gloop
Zombie brain with fresh guts
Freshly harvested large intestines with flayed skin
Ground bones with crudities - yes, even Zombie Kings need their 5 a day
Pickled skeleton brain
Oh YUM!

No doubt you want to know what I really feed my son...
Frankenstein gloop -green smoothie made with spinach, mango, banana & kiwi
Zombie brain with fresh guts - Strawberry puree with a jelly (jello) brain
Freshly harvested large intestines with flayed skin - pasta in tomato sauce and parma ham
Ground bones with crudities - hummus with cucumber & carrot sticks
Pickled skeleton brain - hard boiled egg, I cracked the shell and left it in a pot of red water to get the effect.

See, pretty healthy after all!

We also carved a pumpkin, this is a big deal because there are no pumpkin patches to go and pick one here, some of the supermarkets sell them - at an extortionate price I may add. We dropped lucky, when we went to the zoo last week, they had a few for sale for ¥500.

We are beginners at all this, we never did pumpkin carving as a kid, we used swede if anything. I think having the proper tools would help, I had horrible visions of real severed fingers, thankfully we finished without a spot of blood spilt!

That is all the gruesome stuff out of the way, until next next year....

Halloween 2012...

Halloween is by far the favourite festival of the year in this house, Ebi-kun has been excited for months and changed his outfit idea about 76 times! He finally decided we should be a zombie family, I was secretly relieved because it is possibly the easiest costume to pull off!
I must say, we were looking particularly gorgeous when we set off...

My husband was worried that we might cause a car accident but the weather was horrible so I doubt anyone could see in anyway. Of course Ebi-kun decided he needed the toilet so we had to stop at a 7/11, highly amusing!

I rustled up some small intestines with freshly picked eyeballs and severed fingers, we always do our parties as pot luck and it amuses me to no end to hear the kids asking for a couple of fingers, eyeballs or brains!

The punch bowl was a big hit, I added some extra eyeballs and worms in there too - yes, I am revolting!

We were lucky, when it came time for Trick or Treat the rain had eased up, when the kids had collected their treats we went back and played games. Jack had decorated their garage into a haunted house so there was storytelling in the dark, which was fun.

I had made the scratch cards which the kids really got into and they all went away with scars and vampire bites. Poor K-kun won 'The Zombie Kiss', he didn't look very impressed lol.

There were some crafts and lots of candy eating. The rain stopped again so the boys went out to play football, all in all it was another great party. Ebi-kun is already planning what to wear next year....

Halloween Finger Food

We had our playgroup Halloween party on Saturday. One of the members organized it at their home, well the park in front of their house and talked some of the neighbours into doing the Trick and Treat bit for the kids.

It was great fun, sadly I didn't get many pictures since the battery ran out on my camera. Ebi-kun loved it and wanted to do it all again the next day!

When we have playgroup events, it is usually a potluck party which is great because we get such a mixture of foods. I did forewarn everyone that I would be taking fingers and eyeballs but sooo many people told me after, that they thought I was joking - as if I would joke about such a thing!

So, just in case your supermarket is all out of fingers, here is a quick tutorial or is it a recipe? to make your own. Check out the Fast & Fun Ghoulish Halloween Treats ebook for more revoltingly good ideas!

You will need:
Wiener sausages, I like the mini ones, they look more like tender kids fingers rather than grizzly adult ones.
White onion
Ketchup

Cut a small section off the top of the weiner, this is where the nail will go

Then make 3 small cuts halfway down, this will be the knuckle

Cut the onion into thick slices, then cut the slices into slightly triangular pieces, pop the onion and weiners into boiling water for a few minutes. As they boil the fingers will bend slightly.

Dip the bottom of the sausage in the ketchup, then put a little ketchup on the wiener where the nail with go, add a piece of onion and you are done! Pop them in mini cupcake wrapper if you want to get fancy!

Last year I used yellow pepper for the nails, the onion was easier. You could use green pepper for monster fingers.

Enjoy!
